Every golfer knows the most irritating shot around the green is that in between shot. You line up with your nine iron, and hit a beautiful shot that gets caught up in the fringe around the green. While this is generally not a putt, you can use your putter to better control your next shot. Here is how to use your putter on the fringe of the green.

  • Golf Ball
  • Golf Green

How to Putt From The Fringe of the Green

  1. Step 1

Line up your shot just as you would do so if you were on the green cleanly. This can be tricky and you should look at the shot from every angle to ensure that you will keep your ball on the right line.

  2. Step 2

Adjust your speed and add a bit more strength to the shot then you would from the green surface. The ball is going to drag in the fringe a bit so you need to account for this when determining how hard to strike your golf ball.

  3. Step 3

Widen your stance just a bit to give you better control over your base. When putting through the fringe, you need to have a firm stance over the ball so that your club does not turn.

  4. Step 4

Grip your putter just a bit more firmly than you would for a normal putt. See step three above for why.

  5. Step 5

Find the shortest fringe to move through when it is possible. This will allow you to reach the green quicker, and lessen the chances that your golf ball will get held up.

  6. Step 6

Follow all the way through the shot, and strike the ball cleanly. You do not want to short arm a putt from the fringe of the green. This will leave you with the same shot all over again.

  7. Step 7

Watch the ball travel into the cup. This is a habit that is important to any great golfer. Do not give up on a shot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clean any debris out of your ball's path before putting.
  • Use your putter as a line sight.
  • Do not forget to align your putt more severely due to the fringe.
  • Consider the shot like a toss from your hand to get a feel for strength needed.
  • Do not attempt to putt if you are on the second tier of the fringe.
