How to Use Virtual Tracks in Pro Tools

Any track in Pro Tools can have an unlimited number of virtual tracks. Virtual tracks give you an incredible amount of flexibility when working in the Pro Tools environment. For example, with virtual tracks you could record as many takes of a guitar solo that you wanted and then decide at a later time which to use in your final song. The possibilities are endless. Virtual tracks are a great tool to have in your arsenal when making that hit record.

Things You'll Need:

• Pro Tools software
• Pro Tools hardware
• computer

1. Create a new audio track. Go to the main menu and choose File - New Track.

2. Create a virtual track. Click the pop-up menu next to the name of your new track.

3. Select "New" from the pop-up menu.

4. Name your new virtual track.

5. Record a take. Press the record button and play some audio into Pro Tools and then press stop.

6. Repeat steps 1-6 for as many takes as necessary. By clicking the pop-up menu next to your track name you will be able to cycle through any of the virtual tracks that you've recorded, no matter how many you create. That's it! You now know how to use virtual tracks in Pro Tools!

Tips & Warnings

• Be sure to give special names to takes that you like. That way it will be easier to find them in the future. For example, if you played a great guitar solo, try calling it "guitar BEST." When you go back days later you'll be able to easily find the take that you initially loved.
• Virtual tracks are incredible, but be careful not to abuse them. If you go overboard, it's very easy to get lost in a sea of virtual tracks. Before you know it you'll have 100 takes of a part and you'll never be able to find the one you liked!
