How to Use a Weed Barrier in a Garden

Unsightly weeds can turn a beautiful flower garden into a mess in just a few days. For this reason many homeowners are choosing to install weed barriers to deter weeds from growing amongst their flowers. These barriers can be used year after year to keep your flower gardens looking fresh and colorful.

Things You'll Need

• Gardening Gloves
• Scissors
• Gardening tools such as small spade
• Weed barrier fabric purchased from a local garden center
• Weed barrier stakes
• Mulch or decorative rocks
• Flowers

Instructions

1. Prepare the areas where you will be installing the weed barrier. Start by removing any weeds and preparing the ground for planting.

2. Measure the area where you will be installing the weed barrier.

3. Cut the weed barrier to your specifications and place in the area to be protected.

4. Cut holes in the weed barrier fabric large enough to accommodate the flowers you will be planting the the garden. Leave at least a few inches on each side to make it easier to dig your hole.

5. Secure the barrier in place with the metal stakes purchased from the local garden center. This will help keep the barrier from shifting as you plant and add mulch to the garden.

6. Place your plants in the areas where you have cut the barrier away and plant them at the depth suggested on the enclosed care card.

7. Cover the area surrounding your plants with mulch or decorative rocks. This will cover up your weed barrier and make the garden look better.

Tips & Warnings

• Weed barriers can be used for several years without having to replace them. If you will be replanting the area every season you may want to avoid using the barriers.
