Things You'll Need:
- Internet access.
-
Step 1
Get Free Software. Download free software from the Insurance Company Institute on their website at www.iii.org. The program, called "Know
Your Stuff", uses simple fill-in-the-blank forms. -
Step 2
Create a Written Record. Include detailed descriptions of each item including purchase date, price, model or serial number, condition, current replacement cost, store where purchased, etc.
-
Step 3
Make Photographic Records. Photograph every room in your home including closets and cupboards. Take exterior photographs, too. Video, digital and film all work well.
-
Step 4
Keep Important Receipts. Whenever you make a major purchase, keep the receipt as long as you own the item. It helps verify claims and losses.
Keep receipts for smaller items, too. If your kitchen is destroyed by fire, you want to replace everything in it. That includes your espresso machine, gourmet cookware, food processor, etc. -
Step 5
Store Records in a Safe Place. Store a copy of all your inventory records away from your home. A safe deposit box is a good option. If you store records with family or friends, put them in a fireproof box or safe.
