Instructions

  1. Solving a Simple Algebra Equation

    • 1

Look at the equation closely. There are probably "x" terms and possibly "y" terms combined with a bunch of numbers on either side of an equal sign. Your goal is to isolate the "x" term if it is the only one in the equation and if not then to do so by making the "y" term equal to zero and solving for the "x."

    • 2

Move all numerical values to one side. Take the equation 3x + 14 = 26. Move the 14 to the other side of the equal sign. Subtract 14 from either side of the equal sign so you can left with 3x = 12.

    • 3

Isolate "x" by dividing by three on either side of the equal sign. You will be left with x = 4. Double check your answer by reinserting the answer into the original equation 3(4) + 14 = 26. You see that 12 + 14 = 26, thus your answer is correct.

    • 4

Isolate the "x" by moving the "y" equation to the other side when dealing with a two variable equation such as 4x + 3y = 20. Find one value then solve to find the second value as you did above. Good luck!

Tips & Warnings

  • Simplify the equation and combine like terms to make things easier

  • Double-check your answer by pulling it back into the term of the original equation

  • Don't skip steps, write everything out so you can go back and check it later in case you're wrong
