How to Choose Men's Cologne
-
1
Find a store that has many various colognes to offer. This will give you the best selection, and the opportunity to smell many different colognes at one place.
-
2
Smell the cologne first from the bottle. If you like it, spritz a small amount on a tester strip and smell the strip a few minutes later--once the scent has had time to settle down. Don't spray the cologne on your skin, because chances are, you will try on multiple scents and they could combine on your skin, making it more difficult to choose one single fragrance.

-
3
After smelling each fragrance, be sure to sniff a small jar of coffee beans. They have an aromatic quality that will help cleanse your olfactory pallate, giving you a more "true" smell of every cologne.
-
4
Once you have narrowed your search down to a couple fragrances, ask the sales clerk for sample of the selected colognes. This way, you can try the different scents one at a time and see how they react to the chemistry of your skin throughout the day. Oils and hormones in individuals will cause fragrances to smell differently, so what you smell in the bottle may not be the same scent the cologne has on your body.
-
5
After trying the sample colognes for a week or so, to ensure you like the scent, return to the store to purchase a full-sized bottle of the fragrance.

Tips & Warnings
Keep in check how much cologne you apply--you don't want to overpower your co-workers.
Apply cologne to the following pulse points: the inside of your wrists, behind your ears, and on your neck.
Keep cologne bottles out of the light and heat--it will give the cologne a longer shelf life.
Make the scent last longer by using the same fragrance in a shower gel, aftershave, and/or moisturizer.
Don't put cologne on clothing. It may stain your clothes!
Avoid rubbing wrists together after applying cologne. The rubbing action can actually change the scent of the fragrance.
