How to Improve Your Sprint

Improve your sprint.

Runners sometimes reach a plateau where they feel they've maxed out their speed and can't get to the next level. Sometimes, it's just a matter of switching up your training regime. Your body is excellent at adapting and needs to be continually challenged in order to improve. It's true with running, certainly, and especially sprinting, where much effort is involved just to shave a few seconds off a competitive sprint. Here's how to improve your sprint.

Instructions

    • 1

Be very quick coming off your starting position. Train your reflexes and concentration so you leave the starting blocks immediately and transition to your speed running stride as fast as possible to improve your sprint.

    • 2

Train with dedication and perseverance, pushing yourself to the next level in your running ability. You should alternate between speed workouts, endurance runs and exercises. Follow a training regime designed to increase your speed over time.

    • 3

Work on your running posture and form. Make sure your stride and running form are working to your advantage. Keep your muscles from tightening against each other by relaxing your neck, shoulders, jaw and hands. Stay straight in your core and breathe well, avoiding shallow breaths that don't give you enough oxygen.

    • 4

Increase your stride rate, or number of strides per minute. This will naturally increase your speed. Try running drills, such as the Hot Coals where you run as if on burning coals, to help increase strides.

    • 5

Eat adequate protein levels to maintain lean leg muscles. Inadequate protein intake can result in loss of muscle mass even while you continue to train.

Tips & Warnings

  • Run downhill several times a week, at top speed, to accustom your body to a longer, faster stride.
