These are the basics for planning a yard irrigation system. You will be able to measure your yard and calulate how many sprinkler heads will be needed to water your lawn.
You will also be able to plan out a route for laying PVC pipes to get the most efficiency from your watering system. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1
      gallons per minute

Before we plan a sprinkler route, we need to make sure your water supply is adequate for watering your lawn with sprinklers. We do this with a method called "Gallons per minute".

We will most likely tie into the water system through an outside spigot. Take a gallon jug and a watch to see how many gallons per minute your spigot puts out.

    • 2
      PVC lawn pipe

With the flow rate information, you can plan the right size of PVC pipe to use. A common size is 3/4-inch. This size is used for average lawns and it's easy to work with.

    • 3
      Tee formation

Next, we will plan the water delivery route for the pipes. We will want to plan a "Tee" formation so that each riser will have the same amount of pressure.

    • 4
      planning sprinkler system

This will help the irrigation system perform at optimum levels. Each sprinkler head should be placed no further than 12 feet away from another head. This will keep the watering area even.

    • 5
      poor sprinkler layout

Some novice landscapers install irrigation systems with uneven water pressure because of the layout of the pipe route.

    • 6
      uneven water pressure

A sprinkler route like this will have a lot of pressure at the first head, but the pressure will diminish with each sprinkler down the line making a poor watering system.

    • 7
      section irrigation system

Next, we can plan how to connect to the water supply. If you have a large yard, you will want to divide up the pipe layouts to different sections of the lawn. That way the lawn can get fully watered without drawing too much water from the supply.

    • 8
      PVC valves

We can also connect the watering system to a timer which controls different lawn sections so the lawn gets watered automatically. This is done with PVC valves which open and close according to the timer.

    • 9
      spigot connection

The connection to the water supply can be one PVC line that feeds the other lines.

    • 10

That's all there is for the basics of an underground watering system.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to keep your plans in scale. You can do this best with graph paper where each square represents one foot.
