How to Make a Camp Fire

Campfires are fun and rewarding. They cook our meals for us, help us stay warm, they provide a place for social gatherings. I mean whats camping without the camp fire? Here are a few easy steps to follow in making a campfire.

Things You’ll Need:

• flint
• news paper
• dry wood

1. Gather your materials. Deer bedding, kindling and small and thicker larger pieces of wood. Your idea is layering and building up. So you'll begin small and work your way up. That simple.
2. Place a few balls of newspapers on the ground and than top with deer bedding.
3. Now, place some kindling in position on top of the deer bedding.
   Now...using larger sticks, begin to pile as if you were forming a tee pee.
4. Light the fire. Lighting from the bottom you can see if it's burning
   correctly. Once the fire ignites, it should burn correctly. If your wood isn't dry you can still encourage the wet wood by adding more kindling and blowing on it every so often to circulate it.

Tips & Warnings

• Rotted wood should be avoided
• To build a winter fire, begin by digging a fire pit. If the ground is too hard, clear slow away from a circular area and lay down a fire ring or fire tray. Use the steps above to build a fire, as usual.
• Remember when leaving your site , the camp fire you started must also be put out. A few shovels of dirt or sand will put the fire out.
• CLEAR an area of at least three feet from all sides of the fire, so as not to ignite small sticks, leaves or clothing. Line the outside area with a ring of stones and large rocks
• REMEMBER that high winds can spread fire quickly. Always look for an area that is most shielded from strong gusts.
