Are you planting tomatoes near a chain link fence? A chain link fence is strong enough to support even the biggest, juiciest tomato vines all through the growing season. Learn how to grow tomatoes using your garden fence for support, instead of buying tomato stakes.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Plant your tomatoes as close to the base of the chain link fence as you can get. If you have access to both sides of the chain link fence, that's a great situation, because you can access the tomatoes hanging on both sides.
Step2
Prune away the sucker vines. They're easy to spot because they grow "in the armpit" of a vine that's already flowering. A book about how to grow tomatoes can explain how these sucker-vines sap resources from the plant.
Step3
Ignore all instructions to use tomato stakes or tomato cages because you're using a chain link fence instead.
Step4
Tomatoes Get Redder in the Sun Tie twine or use zip ties to train a tomato plant to grow along the chain link fence. You can also tuck the vine through the holes in the fence as it grows, bringing all of the tomatoes to the sunny side of the fence to grow.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you only have access to one side of the fence, pull your growing tomatoes through to your side before they get too big.
  • Watch out for horned tomato caterpillars. They're the same color as the leaves and they will destroy your tomato plant. Remove them and destroy them if you see one.
