Select your hair. Make some calls and locate a hair or wig store in your area. Take a trip out to the store and choose the hair that you want to use. It is important to know that when you are choosing hair you need to try to get the closest match to your hair color. Any variation can cause the extensions to look unnatural. You will be able to choose between synthetic and human hair. Human hair is a better choice for several reasons. First, you can use heated styling tools with human hair. With many types of synthetic hair, any heat will cause the hair to melt. Second, human hair looks more natural. Keep in mind that human hair will cost more than synthetic hair but the results you get are worth the price difference.

Color the hair. If you plan to color the hair, now is the time to do it. Color it like you would your own hair and make sure that you condition it following the hair color.

Cut the hair. There is a two step process to cutting the hair. If you’ve colored the hair you may want to cut the ends off. They may be a little bit dry. Make sure you use sharp scissors for this because dull scissors will cause the ends to fray. The second step is to cut the wefts. Cut them into 1-inch, 3-inch and 4-inch pieces.

Attach the wig clips. Use the hair glue to attach the wig clips to the hair wefts. Make sure the part that opens out is facing you. Allow the clips to dry for about two hours and then go check on them. If they are still even remotely tacky, give them another 30 minutes. You don’t want to continue to the next step until everything is completely dry.

Sew the wig clips in. Once the glue on the clips has dried it’s time to sew the wig clips in. There is a hole on the top of the wig clip and one hole on each side. Sew the hair string through the holes for extra security. Once you’ve done that, your hair extensions are ready to wear.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want to make highlights to clip in to your hair, choose hair that is a lighter color than your own hair and follow the same steps.
