Whether you use fresh or frozen watermelon for your smoothie, the drink epitomizes refreshment. Watermelon smoothies are sweet without being cloyingly so, and froth up to a bright red color. The best tasting smoothies come from the ripest melons; select watermelons with a yellow or cream-colored patch on their undersides. Use your blender for this recipe, adapted from one by the University of Illinois Extension.

Ingredients

    • 3 cups cubed watermelon, frozen or fresh

    • 2 cups additional fruit, frozen or fresh

    • 8 ounces plain yogurt or 1 cup milk or ice cream

    • 3 ice cubes, optional

Directions

  • Pick out all the seeds from your watermelon before and after cutting it.

Place all the ingredients in a blender and process them on high until the watermelon and any additional fruit are thoroughly liquefied and the smoothie is frothy.

Serve the smoothie immediately or reserve it in the refrigerator for two to four days. Blend the smoothie for about 20 seconds to make it foamy just before serving.

Tips

  • Other fruits that taste good with watermelon include blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe and raspberries.

Give your smoothie extra tang by adding a few teaspoons of grated fresh ginger, lemon juice and zest, or lime juice and zest.

To give your smoothie a taste of mint, either add crushed fresh mint leaves or a teaspoon of mint extract.

Omit the yogurt or milk from your smoothie and add a splash of sparkling water after blending instead to turn your drink into a carbonated beverage.

Warnings

  • All fruit, including watermelons, need a through washing under running water before you cut them to help remove any traces of pesticides.

Your smoothie will separate after sitting, with bits of watermelon floating about the liquid. To help avoid this, add a banana to the smoothie mix or provide everyone with straws or spoons to stir their smoothies as they sip.
