Sandwiches can be kept warm and ready to eat inside a crockpot.

Sandwiches are a great meal idea when serving just a few people or feeding a larger crowd. Sandwiches that are served warm, such as hot ham and cheese, either need to be served immediately or kept warm until it is time to eat. Using a crockpot to keep sandwiches warm is one way to prepare a dish in advance and have everything ready to go as soon as it is time to eat.

Step 1

Use hearty rolls or thick bread to prevent bread from becoming soggy during the warming process. Good choices include ham and Swiss cheese on Kaiser rolls, cooked hot dogs in buns or thinly sliced roast beef and provolone cheese on submarine style long rolls. Avoid adding condiments, such as mustard, horseradish sauce or mayonnaise, to the sandwich when preparing.

Step 2

Wrap each sandwich individually in a sheet of aluminum foil. Wrap loosely to avoid pressing down on the sandwich. Do not leave any gaps or holes, making sure the entire sandwich is covered in tin foil.

Step 3

Turn the crockpot to the lowest setting available, or use the warm setting if the crockpot is equipped with that feature. Add 1/2 to 1 inch of water to the bottom of the crockpot.

Step 4

Take 12-inch sheets of aluminum foil and roll them into balls. Add the tin foil balls to the top of the water in the crockpot to form a shelf on which to place sandwiches. Repeat the process of adding foil balls until the bottom of the crockpot is covered.

Step 5

Place sandwiches, one at a time, on top of the tin foil shelf in the crockpot. Do not press the sandwiches down on top of one another. Allow the sandwiches to rest gently atop one another. Place the lid on the crockpot and allow the unit to keep sandwiches warm until ready to eat.

Tip

Add warm sandwiches to the crockpot to start and allow the crockpot to keep the sandwiches warm. You will know the crockpot is warm enough once you see steam rising from the water along the bottom of the crockpot.

Place potential condiments beside the crockpot for use once sandwiches have been removed from the unit.

Warning

Never use paper inside a crockpot due to the potential of paper burning in the unit.

Use tongs to remove the warm sandwiches from the crockpot to avoid getting burned.
