Things You'll Need:

  • a vehicle to donate
  • the vehicle's title
  1. Step 1

Contact local charities to find out if they accept donated cars. If you're not sure which charity to donate to or can't find one that accepts cars in your area, you can contact one of the many car donation services that can be found online. America's Car Donation Charities Center and Vehicles for Charity are just two of many.

  2. Step 2

Once you find a charity to donate your car to, you'll need to fill out a minimal amount of paperwork. You'll need to know your vehicles VIN number, the mileage, the year and make of the car and the title number. They'll also want to know about the condition of the car. Some charities will take cars that don't even start.

  3. Step 3

Submit your paperwork and make arrangements for your car to be picked up. Most charities will pick up the car from your home. Be sure to clean all of your personal belongings out of the car and remove the license plates before they come to pick it up.

  4. Step 4

When you donate a car you get a tax break. In order to get that tax break you must complete a 1098-C form. You can file this when you file your taxes for that year.
