How to Stop Forgetting Things

How to Stop Forgetting Thingsthumbnail
Car Keys

As a young teen I was extremely forgetful. So much so that some family members cracked jokes about my forgetfulness. Once after hearing a comment that was said at my expense that felt like a slap in the face. I decided to try to change my ways. And quickly things improved. And now no one can say I'm forgetful.

    Things You'll Need

    • Clear mind

The best time for me to forget things is when I'm leaving my home to go somewhere. I would always leave something important behind. I started clearing my mind and making a mental note of things I needed to take with me. Sometimes I would even make a list on paper, like a grocery list. But it's not a good thing to rely on. It's a good idea to exercise your brain by making mental notes.

If your going on a trip for instance, you know your going to need Shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, under garments, Socks, shoes, etc. I would think from the top of my head down and make sure I had ever thing I needed from head to toe. I'd pack it as I was thinking of it. Then double check from head to toe.

If I had a mental list of things I needed, sometimes I would count them. For instance, if I knew I needed 5 things to take with me I remembered the number 5. And then remember what individual thing went with 1,2,3,4,5. (e.g...(1)Tooth brush (2)Tooth Paste (3)Floss......
So before I left I'd look for 5 things. If I didn't have 5, I'd look and figure out what was missing. This works great at the grocery store too.

And for people who lock their keys in their car or their home. I always, always make sure my keys are in my hand before shutting the door. I never leave them in my purse. That's a for sure way to leave them behind, is to assume they are in your purse or pocket. After a while of doing this, it will feel normal. So that if their not in your hand your looking for them before you shut the door.

    Tips & Warnings

    • To some this may sound like common sense, but I really had to put effort into my forgetfulness when I was a teenager. And to some it may sound like a lot of trouble. But it really works. And after a while it becomes second nature.
