Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Start by asking your family and friends if they think you have a good enough voice to try out for American Idol. Of course, there will be plenty of relatives who believe in you and their opinion might be a little biased. So don't stop there.
Step2
Sign up for voice lessons with a reputable teacher. See what kind of references they have and what education they have to support their teaching abilities. Start with an audition and ask them what potential they think you have with your voice quality.
Step3
Sing, Sing, Sing. You will need to know how to sing and in various settings. If you can sing in front of people before auditioning it will increase your experience and ability to react professionally instead of acting like a novice. Watch many types of professionals and how they present themselves but be careful not to mimic them, the show is looking for originality as well as talent.
Step4
Watch the American Idol website for their listing of upcoming audition cities. Usually it is listed during the summer months after the previous season has finished. Purchase travel and hotel tickets as soon as possible or make the appropriate arrangements as far in advance as you can.
Step5
Prepare for the practical. Talk to your boss and find out what is necessary to keep your job during the time missed. Start a savings account for the travel expenses. You will need a proper outfit and haircut. Think through your list of responsibilities from pets to child care to education and make plans to take care of them during your absence. Evaluate your motives. Do you want to be the next American Idol or just want exposure to get a singing job?
Step6
Get the American Idol's list of requirements when it is posted on their website and then read through them carefully to make sure you meet each and every requirement and deadline.
