    Using BMX Safety Gear

  1. Step 1

Choose a proper helmet for the type of riding you will be doing. A normal bike helmet will work but provides insufficient coverage and protection if you are a serious rider. BMX helmets offer full head coverage, much like a motorcycle helmet. A quality pair of goggles will keep mud and dirt out of your eyes.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a quality set of elbow and knee pads. Falling off your bike is inevitable in BMX racing and injuring an elbow or knee can slow you down or keep you off the bike completely. Many companies offer many options for protection.

  3. Step 3

Invest in a chest protector to keep your ribs and chest safe in case of an accident. This piece of equipment keeps your chest safe from handle bars and the ground in a single bike wreck and also protects you from other bikes in a pile up.

  4. Step 4

Find a pair of gloves that is well ventilated and provides superior grip. Your hands are an essential part of the BMX rider. Keeping them safe from flying debris and tightly connected to your handle bars is essential.

  5. Step 5

Try on several different types of shoes before making a decision. There are several brands of shoes, and some now provide clipless technology much like road and mountain bicycles. This allows the rider to lock their feet in place so they do not slip out during a race. Be certain you have the right pedals for these shoes before purchasing.
