  • Caulking

  • Drill
  • Stepladder

Installing Storm Windows and Lowering Your Electric Bill

  1. Step 1

Measure the existing windows themselves (do not include the frame, shutters, or any other “extras”). Measure the top of the windows first, then the bottom, then the left side, then the right side, and last measure corner to corner. Record the measurements.

  2. Step 2

Determine the type of storm windows you want to purchase (exterior or interior.) Exterior storm windows can be removed during the summer months and stored, thus allowing them to be used over and over again for several years. However, since they are exposed to the elements, they will need replacing sooner than interior.

  3. Step 3

Purchase the storm windows you have chosen, as well as any screws that will be needed for installation.

  4. Step 4

If the storm window unit—in other words, the frame and window itself—are separate, attach the storm window frame to the existing window frame. Most storm windows will already have the screw holes in the frame.

  5. Step 5

Fit the storm window into the storm window frame.

  6. Step 6

On exterior windows, caulk around the storm window frame and around screw holes. However, DO NOT caulk around the bottom holes. These are not screw holes; they are ventilation holes to decrease condensation.

Tips & Warnings
  • When considering whether to purchase exterior or interior storm windows, remember that exterior storm windows frequently allow condensation to form between them and the existing window, which can sometimes result in mold forming on the window panes and surrounding surfaces.
  • Exterior storm windows are meant to be removed each summer, while interior storm windows can be left in place for several years until they need replacing.
  • Use caution when climbing on and off a stepladder. Make sure the stepladder is placed on a firm surface, and be sure your footing is secure before climbing each rung. Do not stand on the very top of the ladder.
  • Do not use overturned buckets or similar objects to stand on. They may not hold your weight.
