No one likes the signs of aging - wrinkles, deep creases, baggy skin around the mouth and neck. However, scientists at the University of Michigan who examined many anti-aging treatments say this process can be halted. They found that outward signs of aging come from a structural breakdown inside the skin, and zeroed in on treatments that are consistently effective. The three treatments recommended by the dermatologists all stimulated the growth of new collagen, Their conclusions, based on more than a decade of studies, were published in the May issue of Archives of Dermatology. Not only do these treatments all improve the skin’s appearance, but they also increase the skin's ability to keep from bruising and tearing, important qualities since our skin is our most important barrier against infection from bed sores and viruses. Collagen is produced in the sub-surface layer of skin known as the dermis. The University of Michigan's report shows that the breakdown of the dermis is very important in causing aging. The good news is that it is easier to repair the structure of the dermis than it is to change complex genetic factors that may also contribute to aging skin. By following one of these three treatments, you will be able to strengthen your aging skin.

Things You'll Need:

  • The three treatments shown by the University of Michigan to strengthen aging skin all focused on collagen repair. They were:
  • Topical Retinoic acid
  • Carbon dioxide laser resurfacing
  • Injections of cross-linked Hyaluronic acid.

    How to Strengthen Aging Skin

  1. Step 1

If you decide to use Retinoic acid to strengthen your skin, you can buy it as Retinol over the counter, or ask your doctor for a prescription for a product that is similar. It is especially effective for skin that has been damaged by the sun. Retinoic acid can be applied to the face, neck, chest and upper arms. Retinoic acid stimulates collagen production, which fills in fine lines and deeper wrinkles.

  2. Step 2

If you decide to use carbon dioxide laser surgery, find a reputable dermatologist and ask him or her if you are a good candidate for this procedure. They will ask you about other skin problems, about whether you scar easily, and whether you have had this procedure before. Make sure to answer carefully and fully. When it comes time for your appointment, the doctor or an aide will wash all the oils from your skin, apply an antibiotic, and go over your skin with a beam of light from a small instrument. This instrument will vaporize the outer layers of skin. Although there are other laser surgery methods besides carbon dioxide, this procedure has been used successfully for a long time.

  3. Step 3

The third technique the scientists examined and found valuable was Injections of a stabilized, nonanimal hyaluronic acid and water . This substance closely resembles the Hyaluronic acid that occurs naturally in the body. By replenishing nature's supply of Hyaluronic acid, it fills in the sagging dermis, giving a softer, plumper lookA 2007 study looked at Restylane, marketed as a dermal filler, and found that injections of the product caused the formation of new collagen, and also limited the breakdown of collagen.Again, it is important to find a dermatologist experienced in these injections and ask a lot of questions to make sure this is the right approach for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • The scientists who analyzed the extensive reports of treatment found that, in each case that the treatment filled in the collagen, it also had the added effect of stimulating more natural collagen production.
  • A moisturizer or over-the-counter anti-inflammatory cream can be used intermittently for any irritation with the topical retinoic acid.
  • Pregnant women are advised to stay away from using topical vitamin A (Retinoic acid).
  • If you scar easily, it is best to avoid laser surgery unless your physician says otherwise.
  • Always use sunscreen on skin that has been treated by laser, topical Retinoic acid, or filled with Hyaluronic acid. Discuss with your doctor, the best kind of sunscreen for your skin.
