Creating a feather marbling effect on pottery pieces is remarkably easy, but it's messy, so be prepared to deal with spilled and dripping paints. No two feather marbled pieces will be alike. The more you practice your feather marbling technique the more intricate and sophisticated your designs will become.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pottery paints (at least two different colors)
  • Small plastic bottles with pointed spouts
  • Safety pin
  • Lots of newspapers, rags or paper towels
  1. Step 1

Drizzle one of your colors into your pottery piece in a random fashion. Work over newspapers or a deep sink. Do not cover your piece with color in a uniform manner. Leave uncolored spaces.

  2. Step 2

Drizzle another color onto your piece, primarily filling in some of the uncolored spaces. Do not worry if colors overlap and begin mixing. Additional colors can be drizzled onto your pottery depending on the effect you desire.

  3. Step 3

Twist and turn your pottery piece so that the colors begin to run together and mix. Additional color may be sparingly drizzled onto your piece at this point to achieve the color combinations you desire.

  4. Step 4

Scrape your safety pin over your piece to further mix colors and create patterns if you so desire. You are the artist and this is where your artistic talents shine. There is no wrong way to feather marbleize your pottery piece--every piece is unique. When you have achieved the effect that you are happy with, stop the marbling process. The unique pattern you have created is now ready.

  5. Step 5

Fire your creation or allow to air dry.
