Things You'll Need:
- Time to shop
- A measuring tape used in sewing
- An index card or a small notebook
- A pen
- A mirror
-
Step 1
Take measurements of your body before you go comparison shopping for a sports bra. Write down all of the measurements on an index card, with a date at the top. Also note where you are in your monthly cycle, as that can affect your breast size or other measurements. Use a cloth or plastic measuring tape that you find in a basic sewing kit. Any flexible measuring tape will do. Ask someone for help if you can.
-
Step 2
Measure the band size by measuring the circumference of your rib cage. Wrap the measuring tape around your rib cage, where the bottom of a sports bra would normally rest. The rib cage circumference should be measured just below your breasts.
-
Step 3
Take measurements from the top of top of the shoulder to the rib cage. This can help you determine if your torso is short, average or long. Do bathing suit straps dig into your shoulders? You may have a long torso, and need a sports bra to fit you accordingly. Even if you are short, you could have a long torso.

Step 4
Also note the cup size of your most comfortable bra. Try on different cup sizes. If the cups pucker, the cup size is too big. If there are gaps on the sides, the cup is also too big. When the bra squishes you into an uncomfortable state, the cup size is too small. Realize that the sports bra may be bigger or larger. The best way to measure your cup size is to take a measurement at the widest part of your bust, while wearing a bra.

Step 5
Subtract the band size from the cup size measurement.
