Everyone's belly button exists as a reminder of the months we all spent in our mother's belly. It is, however, one of the hardest parts of the body to clean. And, as our first scar, is actually quite sensitive. But in case of serious dirt of lint build-up, the belly button should be cleaned with care.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Baby oil
  • Cotton swab
  1. Step 1

Lie down flat on your back, so that you belly button forms a small pool.

  2. Step 2

Apply a small amount of baby oil, perhaps a few drops, directly into your belly button.

  3. Step 3

Let the baby oil set for anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes, to loosen the lint.

  4. Step 4

Gently work your way around the belly button with a clean cotton swab. Don't press or rub too hard: the belly button is quite sensitive and can be irritated or injured relatively easily.

  5. Step 5

As your swabs get dirty, replace them with fresh ones until the bellybutton is clean.

Tips & Warnings
  • If no baby oil is available, you might also try dipping your cotton swab in 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. In this case, do not drop the peroxide directly into your belly button.
  • In the case of a belly button piercing, follow your piercer's instructions. If you detect any significant pain or potential infection, contact your piercer immediately.
