Things You'll Need:

  • Secure Web access
  • Printer
  • W-2s from the current year
  • All applicable receipts
  1. Step 1

Start with the IRS. The Internal Revenue Service offers links to free tax filing programs. The biggest stipulation is dependent on how much income you make. This can change from year to year and program to program. Go to the IRS.gov website and click on the "Free file" button.

  2. Step 2

Select the right program for you. It is suggested that you use the guide to find the program. Use your W-2s to fill in some of the required information like your gross income.

  3. Step 3

Select one of the programs suggested, depending on your qualifications. The best part about filing online through the IRS is that you can expect to receive a refund within 2 weeks of your filing date, especially with a direct deposit. So not only are you filing for free, you spend less time getting your money!

  4. Step 4

After filing, print out a copy of your tax information. Although programs rarely crash, it pays to have a hard copy just in case you need to enter or verify your information again.
