The first date is always the most nerve-wrecking and for good reason. It is the date that will set the tone for all future dates. As such, you should make sure to be on your best behavior and be a gentleman. Here is how to be a gentleman on your first date and beyond.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Flower
  • Patience
  • Awareness
  • Money
  • Transportation
  • Manners

Before the Date

Step1
Confirm the date and time so that there is no confusion. The last thing you want is for your date to show up for your date without you. This confusion can be eliminated by simply touching base the night before your date.
Step2
Give yourself a good cleaning. First dates are vital to the second date, so you will want to make sure that breath, fingernails and stray hairs are all squared away. Make sure that you pack a mint or two in your pocket for emergency purposes. Get yourself nice and sharp for that first date!
Step3
Think about some conversations you might have with your date before you meet. First dates are notorious for long silences, and it can be uncomfortable. To avoid this, have some interesting conversation ready to go in case things get dull. This will leave your date free to simply talk at her leisure.
Step4
Purchase a nice bouquet of flowers for your first date. It may sound old fashioned, but it is a hit virtually 100 percent of the time. Do not overdo it though. Too many flowers says that you are desperate. A single rose usually does the trick nicely. Better yet, while talking find out her favorite flower and bring that on your first date.
Step5
Reserve a special spot for your first date. Whether it is a diner, or a an opera, make sure that you find a special spot. Having your own special spot makes the evening more special as well.

During Your First Date

Step1
Arrive for your date early, but not too early. Being on time means five minutes early. Do not leave your first date waiting at all. The only thing worse is to be overly early. Showing up thirty minutes early while she is still getting ready is a bad idea.
Step2
Open all doors for your date. Not only should you do this on your first date, but for the remainder of your relationship. It shows that you respect and care for her, and that you know how to treat a lady.
Step3
Provide all transportation for your first date, and plan to take her home. Not every date will require you to pick her up, but you should always be prepared to do so if needed. Certainly pay for the cab fare if she is riding home in one. You should offer to accompany her to her door.
Step4
Ask permission before you attempt to kiss her the first time. This is one signal you can not afford to get mixed up. Asking can be sexy as well!
Step5
Give her a call to ensure she arrived home safely. If you do not personally accompany her home, this is a very nice gesture. Do not keep her on the phone when you do, however. Keep it brief.

Tips & Warnings

  • Give her space but let her know that you are interested.
  • If you see that she clearly is not interested in dating you further, do not push the issue.
  • Always pay the bill. If she offers half, accept it.
  • Avoid going up for coffee the first date.
