How to Use Buddhist Meditation Techniques
The study of Buddhism is one that contains specific techniques in order to help reach levels of enlightenment. Becoming familiar with these techniques and applying them to your everyday life will allow you to tap into a source of spirituality and relaxation.

Get into position. While there are some variations with Buddhist meditation, they all focus on specific disciplines of study in order to meditate correctly. The first part of this is preparing your body. Typically, you will sit in a cross-legged or lotus position on the floor. This is for grounding your body and spirit. You will then combine this with a straight back and straight head that is looking straight forward.

Pay attention to where you look. After your body is in the correct position, decide on what you will focus on. Some Buddhist meditation techniques will begin with their eyes closed, while other practices will keep their eyes open, but will stare downwards and forward by about six feet. Both methods are just as effective.

Concentrate on your breathing. In any meditation practice, it is coming back to the breath that helps for relaxation. This is a deeper breath that goes in through the nose, moves all the way down your stomach and moves back up out of the mouth, allowing for a circular movement of air.

Filter your thoughts. Once you begin to settle into the meditation, thoughts will also probably start to come up. Concentrating on setting these aside, emptying them out and coming back to the breath will allow you to start to move into the meditation.

Tips & Warnings
Relax. The whole point of setting aside your thoughts and coming back to the breath is to relax. By doing this, you will be able to gain focus, concentration and ease of mind.
Focus on the practice, not the detail. As you move along with the meditations, you may begin to notice discomfort, problems that arise in your mind or emotions that come up. Always remind yourself to clear this out and come back to the breath.
