Skunks can actually make great pets despite what some people might think. Like all pets they must be loved and taken care of. Here is how to trim a skunk's nails.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Wrap one arm with a towel. This is a preventative measure to protect your arm from scratches and bites.

  2. Step 2

Grab the skunk by the back of the neck or scruff area. Do this with the same arm/hand that is wrapped with the towel. The skunk should grab onto the towel with it's claws giving you the perfect surface and set up to trim them.

  3. Step 3

Clip the nails with traditional nail clippers. Be careful not to clip too far. It's better to clip them often than doing a deep clipping. Skunks are very protective and sensitive about their claws, so the more you touch and play with them--the easier it will be to clip their nails.

  4. Step 4

If you accidentally clip the nails too far and they begin to bleed--immediately put a dab of flour on the nail to stop the bleeding.

  5. Step 5

Wipe the claws with a damp cloth and give the skunk a treat for being a good boy/girl. That's it! Just trim the nails often and you're set!

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the skunk occupied with food so it won't panic and bite or scratch you. You can give them a marshmallow, which they will often just hold in their mouth until you finish. If you don't have any marshmallows, any other sweet that is acceptable for skunks will do.
  • Don't cut the nails too close, it's better to cut them frequently than all at once.
