How to Identify the Chamois

Chamois are not difficult creatures to recognize. They have horns, easily identifiable patterns of fur on their faces, and doesn't look much like any other critters in its native habitat.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Observe the size of the creature. A full-grown chamois will be about 2.5 feet tall, 4 feet long, and 130 lbs.

  2. Step 2

    Look at the appearance of the creature. The chamois is goat-like, with two curved horns on top of it's head. In the summer, it has a short red-brown coat, while in the winter it has a longer, darker brown coat. it has pale fur on most of its face, with a shock of black around each eye running to the muzzle.

  3. Step 3

    Note your altitude. Generally, the chamois stay between 3,000 and 6,000 feet, inhabiting higher altitudes in winter.

  4. Step 4

    Compare your location to the chamois' natural range. The chamois is native to rocky, alpine regions of Europe, as well as certain areas in The Caucuses and Turkey. They have also been introduced to New Zealand.
