A ficus tree is a beautiful and elegant addition to any room. It is also extremely easy to care for, and only takes a minimal amount of tender loving care. Here are a few easy tips on how to keep your ficus healthy and green.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A ficus and a place to keep it
  1. Step 1

A ficus needs a lot of light to be healthy; make sure you keep your plant in a place where it can get a lot of direct sunlight.

  2. Step 2

Keep the ficus's soil moist, but not overly wet; the soil should never be dry enough that it pulls away from the side of the pot. If your ficus is too dry, the leaves will begin to turn yellow. If you are overwatering, green leaves will begin to drop off the plant.

  3. Step 3

Remove any yellow leaves that are on the plant. This will help the light get through to the green, living leaves. Pruning will help to both keep the size of the ficus under control and help it to grow full and lush. Prune branches just above a node or a leaf scar.

  4. Step 4

Your ficus may show signs of over- or under-watering when you move it. This isn't necessarily a sign that you're doing something wrong, it may be just adjusting to its new light source and temperature. Give it some time to adjust to the new surroundings; if the sickly-looking leaves don't get healthier in a few months, consider moving it back.

Tips & Warnings
  • A ficus is one of the most popular indoor plants, sure to its easy maintenance schedule and hardiness. There are a number of different varieties, so make sure you select one you like.
