How to Make Homemade Macaroni and Cheese

Macaroni and cheese is a favorite dish of kids of all ages. Instead of making this dish from a box, however, make homemade macaroni and cheese. It doesn’t take long to make and it will soon become a family favorite. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • Saucepan
  • 2-quart baking dish

Instructions

      Cook and drain the macaroni. Meanwhile, in a saucepan melt the margarine. Stir in flour, mustard and salt. Add the milk and stir constantly until thick. Add 1 1/2 cups cheese and stir until melted.

      Pour the macaroni into cheese sauce. Stir until well coated. Pour into a greased 2-quart baking dish. Top with the remaining cheese and sprinkle with seasoned bread crumbs, if desired.

      Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes, until hot and bubbly.

    Her I thought Velvetta cheese was the onr to use. This sounds good enough that I better double the recipe, if I'm serving anybody but my self. Thanks for sharing such an interesting twist to an old standard recipe. GailM
