How to Do the West Coast Swing

  1. Step 1

Start by counting the beats as the music starts. A six count pattern is counted: 1-2-3&4-5&6. An eight count pattern is counted: 1-2-3&4-5-6-7&8.

  2. Step 2

Move forward: Ladies should always move forward on the first step. Men should move backward.

  3. Step 3

Pass each other: Begin with the pass. Ladies should move forward right and then forward left. Men should move back left and then move to the right. Ladies should then move underneath the man's left hand.

  4. Step 4

Dancing in place: Ladies should then dance in place to the right while the men complete a 1/4 turn and dance in place to the left.

  5. Step 5

Do a turn: Ladies should complete a 1/2 turn and dance in place to the left while men should turn 1/4 and dance in place to the right.

  6. Step 6

Learn other steps: Once the pass has been completed, you can move on to other steps. These steps include the whip, sugar push and the tuck turn.
