Plastic milk containers are ideal as plant protectors. The sturdy plastic jugs allow light to penetrate while providing warmth and protection from the elements. Creating a warm sheltered environment will allow you to set out plants earlier in the spring and get them off to a good start. They can even be used as a temporary covering when frost is predicted and then stored by stacking them inside one another until they are needed again.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Empty plastic gallon milk containers
  • Sharp knife
  • Scissors

Get Your Milk Container

Step1
Remove the caps from several one gallon milk containers. Wash in warm soapy water to remove any traces of milk. Allow the containers to dry. You will need one milk jug for each plant.
Step2
Puncture a hole near the bottom base of the container with a sharp knife.
Step3
Cut off the entire bottom of the container with a pair of sharp scissors. Discard the bottom.
Step4
Place the milk container over the top of your plant in the garden. Push down to anchor the bottom of the milk container int he soil.
Step5
Scoop loose soil around the base of the plant cover and press firmly with your hands. This will prevent the wind from blowing the container over.
Step6
Leave plant protectors in place for as long as the plant inside continues to thrive. Remove when outside weather conditions are optimal for your plants.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place plant protectors over newly planted cucumber seedlings. Leave the container in place until the cucumber plant completely fills the container. Uncover and watch your cucumber plants thrive.
  • Store your plant protectors stacked inside one another and reuse when necessary.
