Imagine being able to make fake rocks that look real. You can learn how to make artificial rocks and use them indoors or out. Fake landscape rocks can be pricey, but making them yourself is easy and fun.

Things You'll Need:

  • Styrofoam or foam spray insulation
  • wide roll of plastic mesh tape
  • masking tape
  • 1 bag of tile grout
  • grout tint

    How to Make Artificial Rocks

  1. Step 1

    Break apart pieces of Styrofoam to serve as the bulk of your rocks. If you're using sheets of Styrofoam, you can stack them together to make them bigger. Don't worry about the shape; real rocks come in all shapes and sizes, so should fake landscape rocks.

  2. Step 2

    Try using spray foam. Used in insulation or roofing repairs, this product expands and dries into a foam and is easy to paint on. Spray some on a sheet of waxed paper for easy removal and a flat bottom surface that's perfect for making a fake rock wall for your fireplace or for climbing.

  3. Step 3

    Cover your Styrofoam rocks with self-adhesive plastic or fiberglass mesh so that the grout has a surface to adhere to. You're almost done making your fake landscape rocks.

    Mix enough grout to cover your fake rocks. Begin slathering the grout on the outside of the rocks. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for tinting your grout. When you're done, everyone will want to learn how to make artificial rocks.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're making spray-foam rocks for indoor use you can simply paint them with a matte finish until they look real.
  • Be sure to wear protective gloves while making artificial landscape rocks because grout can be very drying to your skin.
