You can calculate volume with an easy to use formula. The standard shapes such as a square or rectangle all use the same formula.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • The dimensions of the object
  • Calculator (optional)

How to Calculate Volume

Step1
Measure the length of the object. For example, a box may measure 10 inches long.
Step2
Measure the width of the object. The same box may be 10 inches wide.
Step3
Measure the depth, or height, of the object. In this example the depth will be 10 inches.
Step4
Insert the measurements into the formula.
Step5
Multiply the length (L) times the width (W) times the height (H). The formula looks like this: LxWxH For this example, to calculate the volume of the object the formula would be 10 x 10 x 10 = 1,000 cubic inches.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always remember the unit of measure is in cubic inches, feet, meters, and so forth.
  • This formula is for square or rectangular objects.
