Chili is popular no matter what time of the year it is. Even in the summertime, people love to have this spicy dish to serve on hot dogs. Yet, the same old recipe can get boring. Making gourmet chili isn't hard though. You can take your favorite recipe and create a gourmet meal. It just takes a few substitutes and a few easy steps.

From Quick Guide: Chili Recipes
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make beans from scratch. Canned beans are usually used in chili because they're convenient, but home cooked beans allow you to control the flavor of the final product. Home cooked beans also prevent you from having overcooked beans. Chili needs to cook once the beans are added. When you use canned beans, they cook to the point that they are mushy.

  2. Step 2

Use high quality meat. Ground beef is a popular choice, but it isn't very gourmet. Instead, why not consider using beef tenderloin or even venison? Both choices will add tons of flavor and are sure to take the boredom out of your chili pot.

  3. Step 3

Add fire roasted tomatoes. Another wonderful way to add flavor to your gourmet chili is to add fire roasted tomatoes. This will add even more smoky flavor that your guests are sure to love.

  4. Step 4

Substitute the chili powder. Almost every recipe calls for chili powder, but if you want a more gourmet flavor, why not consider adding ancho chiles or chipotle peppers in adobo sauce? Both choices will add a more complex flavor.

Tips & Warnings
  • For even more flavor, marinade the meat a few hours before adding it to your chili.
  • Be careful when adding different peppers, the heat may be more than you're used to.
