How to Grow Sweet Peas
Sweet peas are pretty to grow in the garden, and wonderful for cutting for bouquets or arrangements. Growing your own sweet pea garden outside is easy as long as you water it every day and help support the plants as they grow. Seed can be sowed directly into the ground or started inside in late winter. They are a cool weather plant and will give flowers until early summer. Things You'll Need
- Sweet pea seeds
- Trowel
- Sunny area of soil
- Small bowl of water
- Support lines such as mesh, string or stakes

Soak the seeds for 12 to 24 hours in room temperature water.

Choose a sunny area for planting. Dig a trench 6 inches deep.

Place seeds in the trench about 3 inches apart.

Cover seeds with 1/4 inch of soil and water.

As the seedlings emerge and grow, fill in the trench slowly, covering the bottom most part of the seedling. This will encourage strong roots and a sturdy flower. Do this until the 6 inch trench is full.

Once the trench is filled in, the seedling will begin to produce vines that have small tendrils. These will attach themselves to most any type of support.

Deadhead flowers once done blooming or cut flowers for use in decorative bouquets.

Tips & Warnings
When staking sweet peas, be sure to not disturb the roots of the seedling. It is best to pick a spot where the seedlings can attach to a hanging mesh net or stings that have been hung previous to planting.
Remember to keep the ground moist! Sweet peas love water, but don't drown the seedlings.
Sweet peas are reseeding flowers, so if you leave a few flowers at the end of the season they have a good chance of resowing themselves and growing next season.
