How to Wire a Gerbera Daisy

Gerbera daisies are large flowers that come in a variety of bright, cheerful colors, most often shades of red, yellow, orange and pink. Although gerbera daisies have sturdier stems than some flowers, you may want to add wire to the stems, or replace the stems with wire, to make the stems even sturdier, or to give you precise control for a gerbera daisy arrangement. To wire the stems, you’ll need floral wire and tape, which are available in many craft stores as well as online. Green floral tape is somewhat stretchy and sticky on both sides, so it’s great for wrapping flower stems and hiding the wire.

• floral wire
• wire cutters
• floral tape
• scissors

Add Wire to a Gerbera Daisy Stem

1. Cut a piece of floral wire the length you want. If the gerbera daisy stems are short, you can lengthen them by adding extra wire.

2. Place the end of the wire near the base of the flower (calyx).

3. Wrap the wire to the stem using floral tape. Make sure to wrap the floral tape tightly, using slightly overlapping twirls of tape. The tape will stretch as you use it.

4. Cut or tear off the end of the floral tape.

5. Press the end of the floral tape to the wrapped tape so that it will stick together.

Replace a Gerbera Daisy Stem with Wire

1. Cut off the gerbera daisy stem about an inch below the base of the flower (calyx).

2. Cut a piece of flower wire a few inches longer than you want the wire stem.

3. Poke the end of the wire through the stub of the stem and through the center of the flower head.

4. Bend the top of the wire over like a candy cane, forming a hook.

5. Poke the end of the hook back down through the flower. Press the hook wire close to the stem wire.

6. Wrap the wires together using floral tape. Make sure to wrap the floral tape tightly, stretching it slightly as you wrap. You may want to wrap the entire length of the wire stem.

7. Cut or tear off the end of the floral tape. Press the end of the floral tape to the wrapped tape to stick it in place.

Tips & Warnings

• Once the gerbera daisies are wired, you can bend the floral wire to get the precise arrangement you want.

• Use caution when working with wire and wire cutters. The ends of the wire will be sharp.
