The first single-player mission in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the easiest level in the game. But there is a reason; as the first level in the game, it's the first exposure you will have to one of the most realistic war games ever made. Finding your stride in a game like this can take some time. The first level is a good place to do this, but it is not without pitfalls that can catch the inexperienced gamer by surprise.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You'll Need:

  • Game console
  • Game controller
  • Copy of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

    The Sinking Ship

  1. Step 1

Use stealth as long as possible. The first few enemies you will run into are easy marks--one is drunk and a few are sleeping. Once you get onto the deck of the ship, however, the soldiers you encounter will be alert and ready. If they see you, they will raise the alarm. Even if they get one shot off, the rest of the enemies of the ship will be looking for you, and the mission will become much more difficult.

  2. Step 2

Watch the landings above the deck of the ship as you cross. It's an excellent position for enemies, and if you don't know they are there you can lose before you even know where the fire is coming from. Go up onto the first landing you pass--from here you will have a great shot at the enemies in the next landing.

  3. Step 3

Stay behind your team. They are great shots; they know where you need to go and will open the doors for you and they will draw enemy fire away from you. Your team's AI is extremely good in Call of Duty 4. Using your teammates is an essential tool that you will use throughout the game, so getting used to them now will only help in the long run.

  4. Step 4

Move slowly in the hold. There are few places that provide good cover here, and enemies can appear from almost anywhere. In fact, stay in one place long enough, and it's likely that the enemies will come to you. Stay crouched--standing leaves you much too exposed to enemy fire and laying down will cut into your effective field of fire too much. If an enemy appears to your right or left while you are prone, your number is up. The hold is a great place for flash-bangs and fragmentation grenades due to the contained nature of the hold. There are few places for enemies to run or avoid an explosion.

  5. Step 5

Once the hold is clear and the objective is secure, the cargo ship will take heavy damage from a fighter attack. The ship is going down--it's time to go. This section isn't timed, but fall too far behind your team and you will go down with the ship. Follow your team and try to keep up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Save your fragmentation grenades for the hold. This is by far the most efficient place on the ship to use them, both in terms of ease of use and potential numbers of enemies to eliminate.
  • Be careful when using flash-bangs in the hold. Miss your target, and you may end up helplessly blinded for your enemies instead of the other way around.
