Deep sea fishing is different in many ways from freshwater or bay fishing. The fish you are going to catch will be bigger and stronger, so the bait used is going to have to be big enough to attract larger fish. Choosing a bait for deep sea fishing depends on what types of fish you will be trying to catch and what kind of fishing you will be doing.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Live bait such as anchovies, sardines, mackerel and herring
  • Lures
  1. Step 1

Use an artificial lure if you will be deep sea trolling. A tuna feather lure is a good trolling lure if the sea conditions are not too rough. More good choices for deep sea trolling are large sized, Rapala style lures. If you are fishing in the daylight hours, choose lures of lighter colors that will catch the sun.

  2. Step 2

Use a 'walking' type lure that appears to move across the ocean floor that will attract bottom feeders such as grouper when you are deep sea bottom fishing.

  3. Step 3

Use live bait for still deap sea fishing. For still fishing off the side of a non-moving boat, any kind of live bait will interest the large variety of fish that waits for you in the deep sea. The larger the live bait, the larger the fish you will catch. Live baits like anchovies, sardines, herring, and even mackerel will get you more bites than any artificial lure.

Tips & Warnings
  • When using live bait, be sure to use the proper hooking technique. If you kill your live bait, it won't be live anymore. Proper hooking allows the bait to move more naturally and attract the most fish.
