From Quick Guide: Garden Planning Checklist
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • lawn decorations (homemade or bought)
  • perennials
  • mulch
  • stones,rocks, boulders

How to Fill in a Garden

  1. Step 1

Plant perennials. Perennials are perfect for gardens because they come back every year. They usually require less maintenance than annuals. Most perennials will grow larger each year they come up, so remember that when you are spacing out the plants in your garden. Some common perennials are hostas, lillies, tulips, and ferns.

  2. Step 2

Spread mulch in your garden. Mulch comes in many different colors and varities. Some even claims to kill the weeds in your garden. Fill up the empty spots in your garden with mulch.

  3. Step 3

Use lawn ornaments wisely. Pick a theme for your garden. For example, you could have frogs, birdhouses, and stones. Then stick to the theme. Don't put trolls and pick flamingos in the above theme. There are wonderfully cute and classy figures for your garden available at most home improvement stores and even some craft stores. Place these sparingly throughout your garden to fill in empty spots.

  4. Step 4

Place rocks and stones around the perimeter and even inside the garden. Rocks, stones, and boulders can be found in nature, so these garden ornaments can be really cheap. If you live by a river or creek, you are especially lucky when it comes to finding beautiful and interesting rocks to add to your garden. Of course, you can also purchase them. When you place stones inside a garden to fill in spots, place them in an artistic way. For example, you could place a large stone with three smaller stones in front of it, almost like you have made a stone sculpture. This is a good way to fill in a garden.

Tips & Warnings
  • Plant any annuals you want first, and then plant the perennials. Take a step back and look at your garden. Where are the empty spots? Is your eye drawn to one spot in particular? That's where you should start filling it in. Your garden needs a balance of plants, space, and decoration.
  • Find "real people's" gardens (as opposed to magazine or professional) you like. Ask if you can take a picture or take notes on what they did that you like. Repeat this in your garden.
  • Give your plants plenty of room to breath, and make sure you read how big they will grow, before you plant something next to them.
