How to Protect Toddlers from the Sun

Step1
Keep toddlers out of the sun when ultraviolet rays are the worst. “Stay in the shade whenever possible, and limit sun exposure during the peak intensity hours - between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.” recommends the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Step2
Dress toddlers in light colored, long sleeve shirts and pants as opposed to shorts and halter tops when they're outdoors. This reduces the risk of children getting sunburn.
Step3
Apply child-friendly sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or higher to all uncovered areas of your toddler’s skin—including his face and neck. If your child is going to spend time in the pool, make sure the sunscreen you use is waterproof.
Step4
Buy wraparound sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of ultraviolet rays. Sunglasses that wraparound a toddler's head do a better job of protecting his eyes from the sun because they prevent UV rays from penetrating through the sides.
Step5
Let your toddler wear a brimmed hat to shield her head, neck, ears and eyes from the sun’s damaging rays.
Step6
Keep your toddler out of the path of direct sunlight by letting them play in areas that are heavily shaded with trees.
