How to Stop Gossip

It is rude to gossip. It can be downright hurtful and destructive. Gossip is usually based on lies or half truths and as the story is spread it becomes even more exaggerated. Even if the gossip is true, it is no ones business. The world would be a better place if more people would learn to mind their own business. But, unfortunately, gossip continues to spread. Here's how you can do your part to stop it.

  1. How to Stop Gossip

    • 1

State firmly that you are not interested. When someone starts telling you the latest news, reply politely that you don't engage in gossip.

    • 2

Refuse to listen to gossip. If others are gossiping nearby and you can't help hearing them, get up and walk away.

    • 3

Keep your opinion to yourself. Someone may ask your opinion only to repeat what you said to someone else. Unfortunately, your statement may not be repeated accurately. It's best to keep your opinion to yourself in order to avoid getting caught in the gossip trap.

    • 4

Let others know how you feel about gossip right from the start. By doing so you can stop gossip before it even begins.

    • 5

Turn a deaf ear if you hear someone gossiping about you. Make it clear that you have better things to do than worry about idle gossip. If you don't let it bother you, the person who started the gossip will lose her momentum. Gossip usually dies down quickly when there's no one to listen or contribute. That's why it is important to break the chain of gossip.

A women at my work is very manipulative with gossip. She will go up to everyone and say to them "Suzi is so nice" She will try to get people to gossip about Suzi. You see Suzi is a person who you stay out of her way. When someone takes her bait and says "What are you crazy she is terrible" then later on in the day continues to approch people but she will add "Well Carol thinks she is mean" She loves to gossip but she is very sneaky about it. She did it to me and I said "yes she is nice"
