Uh! Oh! You've been hiking and you suddenly develop an itchy rash on your legs. You know the characteristic rash since you've had it before. You also know how itchy and uncomfortable it can be. There's help on the way. Here's how to treat poison oak.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Knowing how to treat poison oak can make the itchy rash a bit more bearable. One of the best ways to stop the itching is to take a cool shower and use a cleanser called Tecnu. This cleanser is so effective because it has the ability to break down the oil on the skin that causes the allergic reaction to the poison ivy plant. It can be purchased online.

  2. Step 2

If you don't have Tecnu available, the next best solution to treat poison oak is to take a cool soak in the bathtub using Aveeno added your bathwater. This can reduce the itching and make the rash more bearable.

  3. Step 3

Once you've soaked the area in Aveeno or after showering with Tecnu, apply the strongest steroid based cream you can buy over the counter. While you can get a stronger version by prescription, this will require a visit to the doctor's office. Ask your pharmacist which steroid cream she would recommend.

  4. Step 4

Take an over the counter antihistamine to relieve the itching. Be aware that antihistamines can cause drowsiness so don't drive or operate machinery after taking one. Also, check with your doctor before taking any medications.

Tips & Warnings
  • If left untreated the rash of poison oak will generally go away in about two weeks.
  • Avoid repeatedly scratching at the rash as this can cause further irritation.
