How to Get Rid of Dust

How to Get Rid of Dust thumbnail
Dust can cause sneezing.

You know dust as the powdery substance that accumulates on your baseboards, picture frames and other household items. Dust is, however, more than just a visual turnoff. Certain bacteria in dust can cause asthma and wheezing, according to researchers at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Iowa. In addition, dust may contain dust mites, microscopic insects that can cause skin irritation and respiratory problems. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove objects that collect dust. If you have carpet in your home, consider installing hardwood floors. A less dramatic measure would involve replacing drapes with blinds (which are easier to clean). Upholstered furniture collects dust as well, so when it's time to replace the couch, consider leather.

    • 2

Vacuum regularly. If you are not ready to get hardwood floors, make sure you vacuum at least twice per week. Also, seal vacuum filters before discarding.

    • 3

Dust your home thoroughly. The fact that you need to dust is probably pretty obvious. But make sure you dust properly. This means: frequently (twice per week), thoroughly (hard to reach places like the tops of picture frames), and strategically (top to bottom).

    • 4

Open the windows. Fresh air and ventilation help prevent dust accumulation.

    • 5

Install an air-conditioning filter that has the highest minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) rating. The higher the MERV, the better the filter is at removing dust particles.
