    Considerations for Canoeing

  1. Step 1

Safety is always the first priority when it comes to white water canoeing. Look into all of the different things that you can use to make it a safer trip for you. Choose a helmet and a craft that will be able to stand up to the different rigors of a white water trip. Do not forget that you should have a life vest--and you should be wearing it.

  2. Step 2

Learn the proper way to approach the water ,as well as how you should pilot the craft through the whitewater. If you haven't done so yet, take a course on piloting a canoe for white water canoeing.

  3. Step 3

Determine which canoe material will hold up best in white water. Should you be using Kevlar, aluminum or wood? The choices you make will depend on the canoeing location. Talk to your local outfitter in order to get recommendations and suggestions as far as what is the most successful.

  4. Step 4

Consider your own clothing, as well as the equipment that you will be using on your trip. Your clothing is just another piece of equipment that you will be using while on your trip. The most important thing for you to consider is to dress for the weather, but to be prepared for anything that could happen on your trip.

  5. Step 5

Pack a waterproof bag or container with dry clothing, contact tools--such as a cell phone, and a first aid kit. In some locations, these items are readily available and provided by the location, other times it is up to you. A map can also be helpful to help you find your way.
