WatermelonThere should always be a pale yellow spot on one side of the melon where it laid on the ground ripening. If this spot is not present, it is an indication that the fruit was picked too early.

These melons are best when they are firm, heavy and waxy (but not dull) in appearance. Avoid melons with soft spots, holes or cracks.

Thump the melon. If the melon makes a 'thud' sound it is likely full of water and ready to eat.

If purchasing a precut melon, make sure the fruit is firm, red, juicy and is free of white streaks.

Check the stalk to make sure they are not hard or unevenly colored or if part of the green stalk is still attached. These are indicators that the melon was picked prematurely.

When tapped, a good cantaloupe will have a slightly hollow sound.

The best indication of a good, ripe melon is that it has a slightly sweet (but not strong) fragrance when you smell the end where the stem once was.

Honeydew melonHoneydew melons are always green. When these melons are grey in color, they are unripe.

Feel the melon for slight veining. A rough surface indicates the fruit is ripe.

Check the area where the stem was. It should be slightly fragrant, yellow in color, and slightly spongy to touch.
