Things You'll Need:
- Good walking shoes
- A walking buddy
- Flat and hilly terrain
- Several routes to switch between
- Shade
- Water
-
Step 1
Choose walking routes that have varied terrain: Hills, valleys, grassy footpaths, old rail lines, indoor walking circuits, park paths, and beaches are all interesting and enjoyable.
-
Step 2
Turn around and walk your route in the other direction. Take the time to notice flowers, buildings, and people. Greet walkers who are facing you.
-
Step 3
Get a walking buddy, preferably someone who walks just slightly faster than you normally would. Pushing yourself a little from time to time keeps you fresh and prevents you from reaching a plateau.
-
Step 4
Make a play list of moderate, fast, slower, and faster songs to help motivate you when you are walking. By varying the tempo of the music, you ensure that your pace is fast enough all the way through the end of your walk.
-
Step 5
Do circuit training exercises in between walks, or try namaste yoga, core ball workouts, pilates, tai chi, or basic stretches. Find a park that has exercise stations along the walking path. Challenge yourself to do "just one more," each time you walk.
