When it comes time to take a polygraph test, you may be wondering if there's any way to cheat the machine and beat the test. It doesn't matter if you have one little thing that you want to keep hidden or if you want to beat it at a whole bunch of things. There are ways to beat the test and keep your secrets hidden just like you wanted. You need to approach the test as if it was an everyday occurrence and above all else, keep yourself calm.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Think about something else when they ask you a question that you don't want to answer. If you're asked if you cheated on your spouse and you want to answer "no", think of another question that you can honestly answer negatively too. Many people have found this the best way to cheat the test because they can honestly answer the questions in their head, but have those answers pass the polygraph.

  2. Step 2

Answer only the questions you're given and use only one word answers. Many people feel they have to elaborate on an answer and give more details or information, which can cause the machine to pick up on your nervousness and interpret that as a lie. Only answer the most basic questions with a yes or no response.

  3. Step 3

Ask what questions will be on the test or what is expected of you so you can practice beforehand. You can go over the questions repeatedly in your head and answer the questions the same way you would on the test. By repeatedly answering a question in your head, you begin to "trick" your mind into believing that it's answering truthfully.

  4. Step 4

Stay as calm as possible throughout the testing process. In some cases you may be tested on more than just your answers to the questions. The interviewer may be looking at your physical responses to the questions and how you react during the test. Excessive sweating, fidgeting in your seat and tapping your fingers may be interpreted as lying to the test.

  5. Step 5

Control your breathing by focusing on breathing the same way you do throughout the day. The way you breathe throughout the test is monitored as part of your reactions to the questions. If your breaths are shallow or you breathe too quickly, it might be interpreted as you lying to the test.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remain professional throughout the interview, which means you shouldn't act too friendly or tell jokes. This may be seen as deception because you seem to not care about the process.
  • Stick to answering the questions they give you, without volunteering any additional information. You may fail the test because you gave more information than they expected.
  • Never confess to anything or volunteer information. You should focus only on the questions they're asking and not anything you think they might want to know. This can lead to you tricking yourself into answering something they never asked.
  • Don't rely on tricks like biting your lip or poking yourself when taking the test. Many polygraph testers are trained to look for these tricks and it can earn you an automatic failure.
