Things You'll Need:
- A quiet place where you will not be disturbed
- Pendulum
- Pen (optional)
- Paper (optional)
-
Step 1
Choose a time to work with your pendulum when you know that you will not be disturbed. Sit comfortably and take a few deep breaths to clear your mind and relax. Focus your mind on your intent. Define your purpose, and establish the questions you would like to ask. It sometimes helps to write out the questions, or keywords, beforehand.
-
Step 2
Once you are focused, hold the pendulum between your thumb and first finger. Some prefer to let the pendulum rest between the first and middle fingers, but I have found that the thumb and first finger work best. Greet Spirit, or whichever Power you feel comfortable working with, and ask for guidance with your divining.
-
Step 3
As a rule, when dealing with basic YES and NO responses, the pendulum generally will move vertically (north to south) for YES and horizontally (east to west) for NO. However, there are exceptions to every rule. After a couple sessions, you will learn the directions in which your pendulum will respond to your questions. As with other forms of divination, your intuition and energies will play a role in establishing the direction of the responses, and it is best to ask the pendulum which direction will correspond to which response.
-
Step 4
Be specific and direct with your questions. You can ask the questions aloud, or silently. Take the approach with which you feel most comfortable. We sometimes feel silly speaking aloud when we are sitting alone, but you may be surprised with the results!
-
Step 5
If you find yourself off-track from your original intent, because an answer has triggered a question you hadn't thought of or planned on asking, go ahead and go with it. You can always return to the other questions later.
-
Step 6
When you have finished asking your questions, thank Spirit for the guidance you have received. Take some notes on the answers you have received. Notes are helpful to look back on, and to possibly expand on in future sessions.
-
Step 7
When you have put the pendulum away, go for a walk or find something else to do to refocus your mind on the more mundane things in life. Sometimes when we focus too intently on certain aspects of such sessions, we lose sight of the obvious. Revisit your notes after your mind has had time to process the information received.
