How to Build a Maternity Wardrobe

  1. Step 1

Borrow maternity clothes before buying everything new. Friends and family members will be eager to give you their maternity clothes after their own babies are born. Many women are tired of their maternity clothes by the end of their pregnancy and will relish the chance to pass them on to you.

  2. Step 2

Check out resale and consignment shops. Many used clothing stores that sell baby clothes also sell maternity wear.

  3. Step 3

Do not buy clothes that fit you perfectly. If it fits you just right today, it will be too small next month, or even next week! Buy clothing that you and your belly can grow into. Otherwise, you'll be buying new clothes every month.

  4. Step 4

Choose clothing that has drawstrings, tiebacks, side buttons, and maternity panels. These will help your clothes both fit properly and grow with you.

  5. Step 5

Purchase extenders and belly bands. These will help you wear your regular jeans well into your pregnancy.

Tips & Warnings
  • When purchasing maternity clothes, remember that wide elastic bands are far more comfortable than narrow ones.
  • Raid your husband's closet for oversized shirts to wear around the house.
  • If you borrow maternity clothes, keep in mind that what looked good on your friend or sister may not necessarily look good on you!
  • Clothing that is too tight is uncomfortable and can even cause indigestion.
