1
Test the air on a jump before attempting a tail whip if possible. This is especially true if it is your first time on a course and if you are not yet the strongest jumper. You will want to take your dirt bike out for a test spin and make a note of the jumps with the best air.
-
2
Go heavy on the throttle when approaching the chosen jump to practice the tail whip. You don't have to go full throttle but do enough to increase speed for more air.

3
Stand up on the bike when getting closer to the jump and choose either to lean to your right or left side slightly. Keep in mind how you will land and how the track is set up; this is when a practice run comes into good use.
-
4
Apply pressure to the back pegs on the bike with your legs and continue to lean slightly to one side. Doing this will 'load' the shocks with force while favoring on side which will provide more of a 'whip' in the air.
-
5
When airborne you will rotate your hips away from the side you chose to lean to and then back as quickly as possible; centering the bike back under your body. This will be one swift motion and works better if you can also keep your thighs squeezed inward on the bike for extra control.
-
6
Brace yourself by standing up on the bike as normal with your knees bent before your wheels touch the ground. Practice these steps in order to perfect your own style and technique.
